I'll start off with saying that you get out of Grid what you put into it. It's usable in its native state, but it's so customizable, too. It can take a lot of time to optimize, but once you get it where you want it, it can be well worth it.

You can also check out thisWoWInsider spotlight on Grid from a couple of years ago. The addon hasn't changed too much since then.

---------------------------------------------
Grid and useful Supplementary add-ons

Grid: The core addon, this is a compact, configurable raid-frame addon. When I have this on, I disable all other party and raid frames. You may have to play around with the settings to get sizes of indicators where you want them.

GridStatusHots: Though default Grid comes with some of these pre-programmed, I've always liked this addon. It's functionality becomes a bit limited around patches, but normally the major advantage to this addon is that it can allow you to track just your own HoTs in grid. As of my last update this functionality was not working, though. Another huge advantage is color changing on HoT expiration. What I mean is that when my rejuv has ~3 secs left, the indicator goes yellow, then red at 1 sec. This is important for spotting falling HoTs.

GridManaBars: Mana(or rage/energy/runic power) bar addon for Grid. I find the default width of this addon to be too big, so on first install, you should monkey around with the settings a bit. I like this for a quick view of healers/dps. This is useful in determining who to give your innervate to if you're not in a mana-taxing fight. Also, when I lead raids, I like to have an idea of healer mana before I push ppl to pull faster.

GridIndicatorSideIcons: This is a situationally useful addon to Grid. It adds additional Icons to the sides of your Grid boxes. This space is not utilized by the default addon, so it can be quite useful. The danger of adding too many indicators, though is clunking up your box and making it so you're unable to see the health bar. Also, you may need to mess with the sizes on this addon, as well.

I previously used this addon, but only ever set any indicators to the bottom box(though I could have set them in the center, I suppose). My center Icon(from default Grid) only showed the debuffs I could decurse/cure, and I had the bottom indicator set to magic and disease(so I could yell at other cleansers) and also fight-specific mechanics that it helped to be aware of as soon as a player got a debuff(bloodboil, deadly poison on Council, Ice Tomb on KT). This would help me switch to that person if I knew there was about to be great incoming damage.

The alternative is GridSideIndicators which is just a dot instead of the icon. however, I think it's broken for 3.1.

GridIndicatorCornerText: This addon can be extremely clunky if you're using it in every corner of your Grid frame. How I utilized this addon was that I kept just default corner indicators on all but my LB corner. I replaced my lifebloom indicator with this text. For Lifebloom, this looks like "2-5" where the first number is the # of stacks and the second is time remaining. With the recent changes to LB, I still like this indicator, because it helps me not to stack over 3 LBs(when I use them) so that I can get max mana return.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

A few of my settings(off the top of my head, they're probably a bit different, depending on the supplementary addons):
Border->Aggro, Debuff Type: Magic, Debuff Type: disease, Your Target
Center Icon->Debuff Type: Curse, Debuff Type:Poison
Top Left Corner-> Buff: Lifebloom
Top Right Corner-> Buff: Wild Growth
Bottom Left Corner-> Buff: Rejuvenation
Bottom Right Corner-> Buff: Regrowth

From wowinterface pics:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
An example Grid setup:

This is off the wowinterface page.
It looks like this user has aggro set to the top left corner, but I prefer for the whole frame to have a Red outline.
You can see what the "Buff Type" center icons look like, in this case, it looks like a poison, magic, etc. This user also appears to have his upper right corner set as indicators for these debuffs, also.
The classes boxes are their respective colors, and there's a built in range indicator(the hazy boxes are out of range).
It's hard to say what the bottom left corner is, maybe incoming heals?

For me, my corners are reserved for my HoTs. It allows me a quick glimpse of who's got a steady stream of what druids do best.

----------------------------------------------------------

Alright, that's about enough of my basic Grid and Supplementaries post. I might add to this later.
